Plums and damsons come from the same plant family and can look similar. Damsons are usually slightly longer, are generally a deep blue colour and have a slightly tarter taste – making them perfect for cooking.
Plum ‘Opal’ and Damson ‘Merryweather’ trees can be found on the Fruit Route. Opal is a red-purple plum known for heavy cropping and an excellent flavour.
Merryweather damsons are relatively large, with blue-black skin and yellow flesh.
Picking Guidance
Plums and damsons are usually ready slightly earlier than apples – typically from late July to August. While apples will stay ripe on the tree a while, plums need to be picked quickly once they are ready to harvest.
Top pick, hold the plum firmly and twist gently; avoid pulling hard to protect the branch.
