Blackcurrants

About our Blackcurrants

Blackcurrants are dark purple berries, also known as black currants or cassis, and are a deciduous shrub in the Grossulariaceae family.

They are native to temperate parts of northern Europe and northern Asia and are known for their tart flavour and rich vitamin C content.

Blackcurrants are easy to grow and can be used in various culinary applications, such as pies, jams, and juices.

They have a tart, slightly sweet flavour and are often used in cooking. They are a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants.

Picking Guidance

Our ‘Ben Lomond’ Blackcurrants can be picked from July to August.

To pick them safely, pick small clusters by hand, holding the branch steady to stop it bending or snapping, and don’t forget to leave some for others.

Check out our Harvesting Tips for information on how to harvest fruits safely and responsibly.
