Blackberries

Rubus fruticosus

About our Blackberries

Blackberries are a common fruit in the UK, typically found growing wild in hedgerows and woodlands from late summer through autumn, often referred to as brambles when wild. They are technically an “aggregate fruit” rather than a berry, made up of many individual seeds (drupelets).

Blackberries are in season from late summer to autumn, typically from August to October.

Blackberries are known for their sweet-tart flavour and can be enjoyed raw or cooked. They can be used in a variety of dishes, including pies, crumbles, jams, jellies, and even wines. They can also be added to ice cream, summer puddings, and as a partner for the first of the cooking apples.

Blackberries are a good source of vitamin C and are known for their high fibre content. They also contain antioxidants, including anthocyanins.

Picking Guidance

Blackberry picking (also called blackberrying or brambling) is a popular pastime. When picking, try not to completely clear the area, as this allows the plant to continue to produce fruit.

Gently pull from the cluster; ripe berries release without force, leaving the white core behind.
